What To Know Before Getting a Dental Crown

Many people choose to get a dental crown to help repair damaged, cracked, or chipped teeth. Placing a crown over the natural tooth can help protect it and reduce any sensitivity you experience. Setting up an appointment with Dr. Peyman Saghizadeh or Dr. Sam Saghizadeh at Newbury Dental Group is the first step to finding out the best solution for your health needs.

dental crownWhat is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap that surrounds the tooth, used to restore damage and improve the appearance of a smile. Crowns consist of all-metal, ceramic-on-metal, or all-ceramic, depending on where the tooth is located. Metal crowns are extremely durable, but all-ceramic crowns blend in with natural teeth more easily so they are usually used for front teeth.

How does the procedure work?

The dentists at Newbury Dental Group always try to make our patients feel as comfortable as possible, and leave our office with the most natural-looking results. It’s important to work with an experienced cosmetic dentist to get the best dental crowns.

The first step is to get an impression of your teeth so that the new crown or bridge can be created. Then we prepare your natural tooth by removing some of the enamel so there is room for the crown to be placed. We will clean the tooth and secure a temporary crown while the permanent one is being created in the lab. While wearing a temporary crown for about two weeks, it’s important to be careful eating and brushing your teeth.

The permanent dental crown is then secured through dental bonding. If you have a missing tooth, sometimes a bridge is used to replace the gap. A bridge is held in place by two crowns on the surrounding teeth, creating a new, durable tooth.

What happens after my dental crown is placed?

During the procedure, we use sedation dentistry to make sure you feel comfortable throughout the entire experience. Afterward, you may need to take some oral pain medication for a couple of days, but recovery is very quick. Your crown will surround your natural tooth, making it painless and easy to eat, drink and speak again.
